Although almost all of the UK telephone exchanges have now been webmail tmnet streamyx (or ADSL) enabled, there are still locations where the distance to the exchange means that fast internet connections are not possible (often referred to as 'the last mile problem'). If broadband is available then the distance to the exchange may mean speeds are limited to 256 kbps or similar. Many broadband providers will tell you there are no other options. This is simply not true.

Although the problem will not truly go away until the connection between the exchange and the user is fibre, there are a number of options that can streamyx complain high speed internet to anywhere in the UK irrespective of location now. The options do vary depending on a number of factors including terrain and will often need a site survey by a professional to advise on which method is the most suitable to your situation.

With all the following solutions, once the broadband connectivity is available on your site it is a simple matter of joining the rest of your site with a LAN (using either fixed, wireless or a combination of mediums).

Broadband Extension over Radio

This should always be the first choice for performance and affordability. Using high speed 5 Ghz radios, a remote site can be directly connected to a location where fast broadband is available without any loss of performance. Distances of upto 12 miles are possible however this varies greatly depending on the terrain, heights above ground of the two locations and what height the radios can be mounted. Typically distances are under 5 miles using roof height devices however this is normally more than sufficient to provide 8+ Mbps links in most situations. The radios themselves are no bigger than a sky dish and are very discrete.

3G

Normally the second choice if Broadband Extension over Radio is not feasible due to terrain constraints. 3G coverage is getting better every day and the speeds of up to 7.2 Mbps are possible. Performance is not quite as good as terrestrial broadband; mainly because it is particularly prone to being affected by concurrent usage by other users. Bandwidth and/or usage management is normally required as most 3G providers have very limited caps and extra costs can be incurred by breaking the caps.

Satellite Broadband

Often, the third choice if Broadband Extension over Radio or 3G is not feasible due to terrain constraints. The hotel kuala lumpur costs more than Broadband Extension over Radio and the performance is not as good as terrestrial (ADSL) broadband due to the distance of the satellites from the earth. This causes an approximate 1 second delay between sending a request and receiving the data. This is seen when browsing by seeing a brief pause before the page loads. The speed that the data is 'pushed' to the user (and therefore the speed that the page loads after this initial delay) is equivalent to broadband though so it is still far better than dialup. The real advantage is that it can be provided anywhere in the UK and is generally not as expensive as a leased line.

Leased Line

This is generally the most expensive of the broadband alternatives however performance is far better than broadband providers reviews broadband or ADSL and comes with a guaranteed quality of service. Generally used where performance and a guaranteed service is far more important than cost. Very high speed is possible but costs can often be in excess of 10k so normally only feasible for the commercial sector or reasable sized communities to aggregate the cost.
